Apprentice Serg Shepard – Chapter 4 – Atonement – Adam Snow, Kristopher Weston, Matthew Figata and Serg Shepard

When I was told I had been called to attend my Atonement Ceremony, I was confused. Atonement means only one thing to me, and that is the acknowledgment of sin. I mean, I know we are all sinners. I have read the Bible. I have heard people with megaphones on street corners.

But within the context of this order, the word made no sense to me. Since I have been here, I have done nothing but try to be a better version of myself. I have worked hard. I have certainly always presented myself in the most positive light possible. What was I really atoning for?

More disturbing was the knowledge that my ceremony would be overseen by Master Snow. To be honest, I had expected to spend more time with Master Weston. I kind of thought—or maybe hoped—that we had something going on.

And then it occurred to me. Maybe I was atoning for my interest in him? I confess that I have repeatedly pleasured myself by thinking about him. I have also regularly found myself in places where I know he will be, just to get his attention. Perhaps the truth is that I have embarrassed Master Weston in some way? That is a sin, is it not?

The ceremonial chamber was in a different wing of the compound, one I had never been allowed to enter. I was escorted there by one of the chamber servants who did not seem to want to say much. Our feet echoed loudly as we walked down the dark hallway; I felt increasingly uncomfortable. The servant stopped outside a large, carved wooden door and told me, rather sternly, to wait until I was called. Then he disappeared into the darkness. I must have waited at least five minutes, my heart pounding in my ears, before I heard my name being called from within.

I entered, expecting the place to be clean and blindingly white like the other ceremonial chambers, but this one was quite different: This room was filled with flickering, flickering candles, and so dark that I had no idea how large it was. It looked like some kind of temple, and in the middle of the space was a long, low table with a black silk sheet stretched across it.

As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I noticed Master Snow sitting in a suit and tie at the head of the table. Two other Masters were also present: Master Figata and—yes!—Master Weston.
